It was a perfect time, as the setting sun bathed the pride, females and cubs, in a golden light as they drank. Fascinating to watch and a privilege to photograph....lucky me.
A leopard had been seen on the move with her cub along a dry river bed. Settling down in the shade, Mum gave the young cub a good licking. A very rare sighting.
I heard there were some Blue Cranes with young in a reserve near Plet. I set off from Knysna before breakfast and entered the place on foot. Straight away I saw a family group in some shallow water. I thought this pic, in black and white, would highlight their wondrous form the best.
I was in a park near Perth and there, in an old tree, were a pair of Rainbow Parakeets, checking me out. They are an unbelievable shiney colour, appearing even more so as they were set against the dull brown of a dead tree.
The Little Bee Eater generally comes back to the same perch after hunting. So if you've clocked it you can just wait until it returns. Bird, Bee Eater and Bee, what more could you want?
We had been watching this Grey Heron catching a snake. An amazing moment which you can read about in the Stories section - Heron vs Snake who wins. I hope you enjoy it.
On a drive in the Greater Kruger area we came across this lovey scene of the female elephant shepherding two young through the scrub. Not both hers, maybe not even one of them, instead she is just taking on her role of carer.
We were late for lunch and had to get to the camp before the kitchen closed. The ranger had a code word to the driver for a hard stop and stop we did..hard. In the bush some way away was a female Leopard climbing a tree. I managed to get some lovely shots of the beautiful animal.
Mr and Mrs Black Kite were posing together on a tree just outside our apartment. They raised a young one last year in a tree next to us and they've come back again this year. They are wonderful and bring us such joy watching them go about their day.
On the Garden Route close to Knysner you can often see the Dolphins surfing in the waves. I'm convinced they are doing it just for fun. This guy is leaping out of the water for joy it. It's really challenging to get a decent pic but it's great to watch and enjoy.
We'd been following this female Leopard for a while but from far away. Eventually we parked up at a spot ahead of her and waited. She come right to us. A wonderful sight with the evening sun backlighting her. Amazing.
We were in the Okavango and this Leopard had an old kill stacked up in the back of the tree. She was up and down, on the lookout for more prey. We watched her for an hour before she settled down, looking at me sweetly.
Just outside the camp was this little guy, on the hunt. As we stopped it flew off... oh no! But it had seen a lizard, caught it and then towards me to show me its catch, lit up by the morning sun.
Having a sundowner in the Okavango I saw these Black Backed Stilts in a lake nearby. They are so photogenic especially in amongst the lily pads.
It was raining, like pouring down. I was in a hide, hardly able to see a thing when this Kingfisher flew in and perched nearby. I have quite a few pics of them in various poses but this is my favorite.
Cormorants are brilliant fishers of fish. I was watching this guy for a while, diving and diving and coming up with nothing. Suddenly it heaved up this huge fish. Could it manage to eat it??? Ummm...no. A size to big.
The ranger informed us that we were in Cheetah country. We stopped and he picked out, far away, a cheetah on an anthill. As we approached we discovered that there were two cubs with her. It was a very special moment.
I call this an Animal Scape. The animal in its environment as a feature instead of 'here is a Giraffe'. This is Namibia, deep into the desert where life is hard and eacked out in a daily battle to survive.
This is my most liked post on Instagram. The Vervet monkey mother had just raided the breakfast table and pinched a bread roll. The little one was hanging in there and giving me the eye. Adorable.
A beautiful family grouping in the grasslands of the Okavango. Lots of love shining through with the elders very protective of the little one.
You could make a good argument that the Zebra is the most photogenic of the african animals. I love the pose in this pic with the evening sun highlighting them. It's in the Okavango too.
Nearby where we live in Switzerland the Grey Herons are nesting in the tall trees. They're busy and noisy flying back and forth. This was a nice pose of one on one of the lower branches.
